The Most Dangerous Road in Starr County, Texas

With nearly 400,000 miles of roads throughout the state, it should come as no surprise that car accidents and the risks of serious injury and death associated with them are commonplace throughout all of Texas. All of the state’s 16 interstate highways and 45 U.S. highways are potentially dangerous, depending on location, traffic, and unique circumstances like driving conditions. But the roadways that drivers should most be concerned about are the ones they drive every day to get to work, school, and social activities.

For residents of Starr County, the most dangerous road in the county is also the largest and most frequently used — U.S. Highway 83.

U.S. Highway 83

Highway 83, the major roadway in Starr County, extends through McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley. As a large highway that routinely makes it onto lists of the most dangerous roads in the United States, it no doubt poses a risk to Starr County residents.

According to data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 202 people died on U.S. Highway 83 between 2010 and 2016. And if those statistics aren’t concerning enough, the majority of the 164 crashes that caused those fatalities occurred in the stretch of the highway that runs through Starr County.

This is likely due to the high traffic in the area as well as the many large commercial vehicles that frequent the highway. Tanker trucks, 18-wheelers, and other large commercial vehicles are especially dangerous for residents, as their size and weight can result in crashes that can cause severe injury or even death.

Unfortunately, the statistics are not getting better with time. According to data provided by the Texas Department of Transportation, there were nearly 800 crashes in Starr County in 2019. These crashes led to nearly 300 possible injuries, over 30 serious injuries, and 4 fatalities. This means that Starr County residents cannot take the risk of daily driving on U.S. Highway 83 or other roads throughout the county lightly.

To best protect themselves, drivers must stay alert, be aware, and use caution when driving on Starr County’s congested and busy Highway 83 and many farm-to-market roadways. And in the event that residents become victims of a car accident, it’s essential to seek legal representation that understands the area as well as the ins and outs of personal injury and traffic accident law.
